So, we are into February already, January has gone, and Christmas is something that happened last year. January is a traditionally quiet month, which is why this months edition is a slightly more “Compact” Bont, if the Times can do it then so can we. During January, villagers have had time to recover from the pressures of the previous months and to detox (although a few haven’t bothered with the detox bit).
The photographs this month are of Carrog several Januarys ago, but does any one know exactly how many? We don’t see scenes like this anymore, is it a good or bad thing?
Looking forward to village life and “Y Bont” over the next few months, we can expect the trials and tribulations of lambing on the Llan and one of our editors will be dispatched to Murrayfield (under protest) to give a special report on the Wales v Scotland match in the Six Nations tournament. April to June will see coverage of the Three Peaks Challenge, where village ‘elders’ will take on a carefully selected team of Carrogites (you know who you are). This will bring us neatly into July and the Llangollen Eisteddfod, no Bretons this year unfortunately, but we will be graced with the presence of a dance group from the Isle of Man. Apparently they don’t have bagpipes, which will please some members of the community! Finally we are looking forward to the sacks full of letters that you are going to send us this year so that we can publish bumper Bonts! Please keep your eye on the diary and try and support at least some of the events that are happening in and around the village, after all, this is what makes us a community.

TSUNAMI APPEAL - LOCAL TALENT EVENING FRIDAY 4th MARCH - WE NEED YOU!
To either help in showing off your own talent and there is plenty here of all ages! Or in helping to organise a local talent evening to help sponsor a village and school in the worst hit areas chosen by the children of Carrog School.
If you have no talent or hide your light under a bushel or cannot assist directly please attend and lend your support.
This method of fundraising was chosen as it allows the Village to target funds raised to a specific village and school. If we were to be become part of a larger fundraising effort this would not be possible and we hope that there will be longer term benefits involving both communities. Prospective participants should contact either Carrog School, e-mail ybont@deevalley.com, or telephone the editors.
Cheques for £50 have so far been received - if you want to make a donation please make cheques payable to “Y Bont”, marked on the back Tsunami Appeal and give your cheques or cash to any of the editors, Janice Sheasby or Alan Dolben.

There is a continuing lack of information regarding any proposals for a change of use at St. Davids and following the article in last months “Y Bont” there have been numerous requests for a public meeting to be held regarding the issue. The Community Council are therefore to be asked to formally convene a public meeting to which Mental Health Care UK Ltd will be requested to attend along with Denbighshire County Council and our County Councillor. Notification of the meeting will be issued shortly.

The older children enjoyed a play, “Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?”, performed in Carrog Village Hall for Carrog School, Glyndyfdrwy School and Llantisilio School pupils.
The Urdd Club is meeting after school every Thursday and is an excellent opportunity for the children to participate in Welsh games and songs.
All the junior children took part in the inter-school cross country at Dinas Bran School.
As part of the Goya exhibition at the Corwen Gallery the pupils attended a story workshop with Fiona Collins using the art work on show.

Following a meeting in the Grouse on 16th January, it was agreed that the event would go ahead, starting 11 a.m. on Friday 10th June at the foot of Snowdon, with the target finishing time of 9 a.m. on Saturday, at the foot of Ben Nevis.
The “Carrogites” have agreed to join the ‘Record Holders’ in the challenge, with the main objective being to better the previous time of 22 hours 13 min.
Both teams will be made up of 4 walkers. There will be 4 vehicles used and a back up team of 8 drivers.
Some members of both teams have decided to attempt to raise money, via sponsorship, for the same charity as on the previous event, Hope House Children’s Hospice. This is a home for terminally ill children, based in Oswestry. An extremely worthwhile, local charity.

As it was dry last Friday I took the opportunity to spread some muck in an attempt to prevent my muck heap from spreading onto the road. I must explain that my muck spreader is an old land device Salopian which I bodged together from two old spreaders that I bought from Keith ‘Penarth’ for the princely sum of twenty quid. Having taken out a few loads without any hitches I was starting to congratulate myself on my shrewd investment and was full of confidence in 1950s technology. It was during this rare moment of self belief when everything went wrong. The bed chain snapped and I was stuck with a muck spreader that would not spread. Believe me, there is nothing more humiliating than standing in your muck spreader in the middle of a field with a muck fork emptying it by hand.
Mr. Woodhall (the vet) came to check the cows were in calf earlier in the week. As the results weren’t too promising on his last visit I was somewhat worried. As it turned out there was no problem all the cows proved to be from 4 - 6 months pregnant. The following day I had a bovine inspection by the Ministry. This involved checking every animals ear tags and all the cattle movement records. This again went OK, apart from the fact that every cow seemed to take great pleasure from standing on my feet or crushing me against the stalls. With my usual impeccable timing I started laying a hedge just as the 70 mph gales hit Wales. A battle of wills ensued between myself and mother nature and although it was a close run thing I gave up and waited ’til the wind dropped to carry on.
Hedge laying is a job that I enjoy but don’t get much opportunity to do, so it takes me a while to get into the swing of things. The first stretch I laid is a bit dodgy to say the least, which is a pity really as it’s visible from the Morfydd. The last stretch, however, looks good even if I do say so myself. Unfortunately that’s out of site at the bottom of Cae Pwll so you’ll just have to take my word for it.
