2006 October
THREE YEARS OLD but we are late again! Every month we think we have everything ready for a 1st of the month publication but then various things conspire to delay and we are once more delivering mid month. One of the problems is copy for the edition arriving either at the last minute or not at all and we therefore delay sending the files to the printers. Could we please remind all contributors that if we are to publish on time we really do need articles, news, etc. by no later than 20th of the month.
Three years is quite an achievement for a community newspaper run by volunteers but we do rely upon our readers to contribute articles, letters, photos and diary events.
A number of people asked about the funny symbol at the top of last months edition - it is in fact the ‘Awards for All Wales’ symbol. The organisation who gave us the grant for the camera, computer, software and printer and for the training courses.
On the 21st October we will again have the “Y Bont” Bash and we would again remind everyone that our grant money cannot be used for the running costs of “Y Bont” so we really need your support. There will be a formal presentation of the grant cheque at this years Bash.
As a reminder of those early days we have reproduced the original front page from the very first edition.
Next month should bring the long awaited return of ‘Wellies and Wheelbarrows’ and we are promised a bumper article.

This will be held on Saturday 21st October beginning at 8.00 p.m. in the Village Hall. This year we have local band RUBYSPROMISE who are increasingly successful, having recorded one album and are about to record another. You can see and hear them on their website www.rubyspromise.com. Tickets are £5 including supper. The bar will of course be open and we will be having the official presentation of the Y Bont Grant cheque from Awards for All Wales.
Please try to attend as it is the combination of sponsorship through advertising and the Bash which only just pays our running costs for the year.

It is nice to see the deterioration of the end property on the terrace has now been halted with the addition of a new slate roof and painting of the walls. We assume this means that the recent threat of demolition to an ideal starter home has now been withdrawn. Meanwhile there is a sudden spate of ‘For Sale’ signs around the Village including the opportunity for a new house to be built.

The first part of the course is now complete and those who attended have thoroughly enjoyed it and are full of praise for the trainer.
The second phase is due to start on Saturday 21st October at 10.00 a.m. and it is still not too late to come and join in. Could we again remind everyone that due to the high cost of the camera only those who have received instruction can make use of the camera.

You may remember that several months ago we received a letter asking about the memorial stone for Thomas Hutton set in the wall on the back road to Corwen. We did not realise at the time that the grave of Thomas Hutton, who died in a snowstorm whilst seeking to walk to Corwen to get medical assistance for his son, is at the rear of Llansanffraid. The wording and even the type of stone are the same as on the memorial plaque.

To the five members of the Llama family who have recently moved into Tyn Llwyn, although apparently their landlord has not allowed them into the Village yet.

FINDING COUNCIL TAX EXPENSIVE?
Well a lot of people in Wales aren’t, because they don’t pay! In Wales £30,459,000 remained uncollected for 2004/05 and £29,523,000 for 2005/06. In Denbighshire the amounts are £824,000 for 2004/05 and £776,000 for 2005/06. In defence of Denbighshire County Council, it is rather better than many other Counties at pursuing non payers. The full figures for wales can be seen at

Dear Sir,
As a one time resident and regular visitor to Carrog I would like to thank all those involved in the restoraion and painting of the War Memorial. In so many villages these monuments are neglected or forgotten except for a few days in November, so it is good to see that Carrog still has a pride and gratitude for the fallen of two world wars.
Yours sincerley, Angela Matlox, Llangollen.
